Biography

Deborah Danziger was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and has lived and worked in Atlanta, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles as well as Seville, Spain, and Prague,Czech Republic before coming to New York City.

Her current paintings center around the heterosexual female gaze. The series incorporates men she knows to express that these are just the regular guys we fall for, but the larger than life format renders them hyper-sexualized. The fertile flora and fauna in the background re-iterate the sexuality of the pieces as they represent the mechanisms by which these species propagate. They additionally add a level of playfulness and absurdity to the work, which is inherent in human sexuality as well.

It is important to acknowledge that historically the male nude has largely been the domain of gay men, not heterosexual women, and the assumption both of a male artist and a male viewer is still one women have to contend with. However, these paintings are not primarily intended as political statements, but rather pieces of sexual fantasy. And, while the intent is to have an inherent "naughtiness" about the work, it's really about the fun in being able to express it, not a desire to shock and dismay people.

Ultimately, Deborah's work is about acknowledging that women enjoy looking at men and displaying this in a riotous celebration of color and ejaculating flowers.
